Stephen M. Carmel is is the Administrator of the Maritime Administration (MARAD) at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Prior to this role he served as Senior Vice President, Maritime Services at Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) with full P & L responsibility for MLL’s U.S. Marine Management Inc. business unit. USMMI operates a variety of ship types, including tankers, Roll on / Roll off, and military special purpose. Prior to this position Steve had a variety of operations and finance positions at MLL. Steve is a licensed deep sea ship’s Master and sailed as a Captain on tankers before coming ashore.
Steve has served on a number of advisory boards including the CNO Executive Panel, Marine Board at the National Academies, and the Naval Studies Board. Steve is currently a member of the Board of Visitors of the US Merchant Marine Academy as a Presidential Appointee. His academic, research, and publishing interests are in globalization, maritime security, and arctic issues.
